Malawi is a small, landlocked country in southeast Africa. It is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” with a population of over 16 million. It is among the worlds least-developed countries, and relies heavily on outside aid. This beautiful country has worked hard to make changes and empowering and educating children is a key to their future. There is an estimated 800,000 orphans in Malawi due to HIV/Aids, famine and other causes, who need shelter, nutrition, education and love. Kusewera is working to do what we can to empower these kids and young adults through various projects in Malawi. We will be working with children in the Chitipi area of Lilongwe at villages, schools and at the community center.  A Kusewera rep will assist you in your travel planning, to assure proper flights, locations etc.  Your destination airport code is LLW. Contact us for ways you can fundraise for your trip!

Philippines : We will add a trip in 2018 to the Philippines, so check back on those dates at the end of 2017!
OTHER GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS may book time at Kusewera Village in Malawi, Africa starting July 30, 2017. Please contact for inquiries, schedule, requirements and program alignment. Please note that while a US and Malawian Kusewera representative will be present to guide and assist during these times, a group/team leader is essential to the success of a non-Kusewera led trip.
Any group or individual requesting to book time at Kusewera Village will be subject to the Kusewera policies and guidelines, and approval after completion of the application process. There is a $10 background check fee for new volunteers or individuals working with the children at Kusewera Village that will be added to your trip costs.
These short-term humanitarian trips  are designed so that people from all walks of life, can go in person to help implement the Kusewera programs, and make a difference in the lives of the children we are committed in supporting.  Anyone thinking of joining a Kusewera trip should not be going to “get an experience” but rather, be ready to serve. Our approach is to “learn from and participate with” the communities. Kusewera has created these affordable, short-term volunteer trips, at a competitive price to that of similar trips offered around the world by other organizations.  The days with the kids includes an intense set of daily clinics that the children attend, that are led by the volunteers, and makes such an impact on these kids.  Be prepared, as it’s a lot of work! As you might know, 95% of mission / volunteer trips have an element in them that gives the volunteer a chance to explore a bit of the country in which they are working in and ministering to.  Studies show that the work can be taxing and sometimes overwhelming and that a break in the middle or at the end, is a necessary mental refresher. Kusewera offers the option of a short, 2 day safari / excursion. We’ve worked hard to gain relationships in Malawi and the Philippines, that give us the best rates on everything from transportation, safari, food, hotel and more.  On these trips, you will be visiting some of the poorest areas of the world, and our visit and resources can help their communities tremendously. We encourage each volunteer to take over 1-2 checked bags of donated items like clothing, medical supplies, sports equipment, etc. that is easier to assure delivery of donations into the right hands.
**Kusewera led trips (unless designated as a family trip – coming soon!) are limited to volunteers over 18 years of age, or 14-17 years of age WITH a chaperone over 25 yrs. of age accompanying them on the trip. Individuals and groups with children may apply. Kusewera has questionnaires and interviews for children under 14, and for their parent(s) and/or guardians to determine if they are a good fit. We recommend a parent join a trip to Malawi first, before deciding if their own child is ready for a humanitarian trip.
**If the volunteer cannot make the humanitarian trip that they register for due to medical reasons or emergency situations out of their control, and notice is given to Kusewera at least 60 days prior to scheduled trip departure, their $500 non-refundable deposit may be held for them for 1 calendar year, in order to allow the volunteer to go on another humanitarian trip within 1 year. If the volunteer is not able to make said trip the following year, their non-refundable $500 will go towards general Kusewera projects that benefit the children.  If the volunteer has paid for the trip, and there are funds above the non-refundable deposit, it may be refunded to volunteer only if it is at least 60 days prior to scheduled trip departure. If volunteer cancels 45-59 days prior, refund amount will be 75% (less the deposit). If cancellation is 44 days or less, 50% may be refunded (less the deposit). Should the volunteer raise funds for their humanitarian trip from donors other than themselves, no refund will be given, but same % amounts may be held for up to one calendar year. If the volunteer cannot make said trip or the following year’s trip, all donations from other donors will go towards general Kusewera projects that benefit the children.
**In addition, if volunteer raises funds over the trip, flight (economy costs only) or vaccination costs, all remaining donations can go to either 1) the general Kusewera account for projects that benefit the children, or 2) be held for that volunteer for a potential trip the following year. If volunteer decides not to go on a trip the following year, all additional funds raised will go towards Kusewera’s general projects.
**All funds raised online will have the online payment service fees deducted from the total amount raised for volunteers.
Any and all fundraising specifically for trip and flight costs must be complete one week prior to trip start date. In addition, any reimbursement requests to credit cards for flights with funds raised above and beyond trip costs, must be complete one week prior to trip start date. Any left over funds will either be held for a trip in the following year, or donated to the general Kusewera fund for projects for the children.
**Kusewera reserves the right to deny participation to potential volunteers that do not meet the requirements, through the application process, reference checks and background check.
